Our Mission

Our mission is to be the most trusted partner and reference laboratory in precision calibration. We make high-quality calibration accessible and tailored to all levels of industry. By combining rapid, reliable turnaround times with expert technical competence, we ensure every instrument that leaves our laboratory meets the highest standards of accuracy and can be trusted to have unbroken traceability to the International System of Units (SI).

Trust in measurement is a foundation of our modern lives, from the speed and altitude of aircraft to the pressure of blood in our bodies. We take this responsibility seriously.

We are Metrologists

We are small team of engineers and scientists providing personalised accredited calibration in pressure, vacuum and electrical quantities. Our service is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) and is recognised worldwide according to the ILAC Mutual Recognition Agreement. We have been continuously accredited for over 30 years.

We are Independent

We are fully independent, focussed on measurements and maintaining traceability to the International System of Units for every instrument, rather than satisfying the sales targets of instrument manufacturers.

APL is an Australian-owned family business with an intergenerational passion for offering the highest quality measurement and customer experience. For us, it’s not just a job, it’s personal.

The APL team respectfully acknowledges the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, who are the Traditional Owners of the land on which our facility is located, and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Our History

APL was established in 1994 by husband-and-wife team, Randall Anderson and Peta McGregor. Recognising the importance of accreditation, Randall obtained NATA accreditation at the outset and began offering high quality calibration of pressure gauges and Dead Weight Testers, as well as software solutions to enhance the use of Dead Weight Testers.

Even from the humble beginnings in a small purpose-built mudbrick laboratory, Randall’s passion for measurement and aptitude in computing and mathematics ensured APL started with a strong foundation.

Quality Drives Growth

APL quickly developed a reputation for excellent quality and turnaround, as well as a friendly and personal service. As demands increased, Randall’s brother, Rowan Anderson joined APL (1997), followed by Liam Shanahan (2009). The three qualified mechanical engineers continued to develop and expand APL’s capability while maintaining the responsive and personal service.

APL soon outgrew the original mudbrick laboratory and moved to its current location in Eltham in 2011. Over the following years, the team continued to grow, with Jordy Anderson, Jordan Hough-Anderson and Nick Mason joining.

New Ownership, Old Values

In 2019, APL was purchased by Liam and Olivia Shanahan, taking up the baton from Peta and Randall. Randall remains a key member of the APL team today.

In recent years, APL has expanded into electrical calibration to compliment their pressure capability, adapting to the needs of modern multifunction devices.

Although APL has changed to meet market demands over many years, the focus and passion for high quality and excellent service remains a constant in our laboratory.
